Dell PowerEdge generations explained: how to read the model number and what each generation supports

How Dell PowerEdge model numbers encode form factor, socket count and generation, a generation-by-generation platform map from 13G to 17G, and where the official spec sheets and technical guides live.

Dell encodes most of what you need into the model number itself, which makes PowerEdge easier to read than most lines once you know the pattern.

Reading the model number

  • A letter then three or four digits, for example R730, R760, R6615. R = rack, T = tower, C = cloud or dense, MX = modular.
  • First digit: class or socket count. 6 and 7 are the mainstream dual-socket rack platforms, 3, 4 and 5 the entry lines, 8 and 9 the scale-up boxes.
  • Second digit: generation. R750 is 15G, R760 is 16G, R770 is 17G.
  • Last digit 0 means Intel, 5 means AMD EPYC, so R7515 and R7615 are AMD platforms.
  • Four-digit models such as R6615 or R7625 combine chassis height, socket count and generation for the AMD line.
  • Suffixes matter: xs is cost-optimised, xd is dense storage, xa is accelerator-optimised for GPUs.

Generation map

Generation CPU platform Memory Representative rack models
13G Xeon E5-2600 v3 / v4 DDR4 R630, R730, R730xd
14G Xeon Scalable 1st / 2nd gen DDR4 R640, R740, R740xd, R7425 (EPYC)
15G Xeon Scalable 3rd gen / EPYC 7003 DDR4 3200 R650, R750, R750xa, R7515, R7525
16G Xeon Scalable 4th / 5th gen / EPYC 9004 DDR5 R660, R760, R760xa, R6615, R7625
17G Intel Xeon 6 DDR5 up to 6400 MT/s R670, R770

Current generation numbers

  • R760 (16G): up to two 5th Gen Intel Xeon Scalable processors with up to 64 cores each, 32 DDR5 DIMM slots, RDIMM 8 TB maximum.
  • R760 memory speed: 4800 MT/s with 4th Gen Xeon, up to 5600 MT/s single DIMM per channel with 5th Gen Xeon, 4400 MT/s at 2 DIMMs per channel.
  • R670 and R770 (17G): two Intel Xeon 6 processors, up to 144 E-cores or 86 P-cores per socket, 32 DDR5 DIMM slots, RDIMM 8 TB maximum, speeds to 6400 MT/s.
  • 17G storage density: up to 40 E3.S NVMe Gen5 drives in 2U and up to 22 in 1U, per Dell's portfolio documentation.
  • Two DIMMs per channel always costs memory speed. If bandwidth matters, buy fewer, larger DIMMs.

Where the official documents are

  • Spec sheet: the two-page summary, best for a quick sanity check on CPU, memory and drive counts.
  • Technical guide: the long-form document with memory population rules, riser maps, thermal restrictions and a comparison table against the previous generation. This is the document to read before committing to a configuration.
  • Dell Info Hub carries portfolio overviews and benchmark write-ups.
  • For a specific machine, the service tag on Dell Support returns the original factory configuration.

The ETON view

The generation digit is a budget lever. A 14G or 15G platform typically delivers plenty for virtualisation, file, backup and web tiers at a fraction of current-generation cost, and the parts pool is deep and cheap. The case for 16G or 17G is usually consolidation, licensing or power: if you are paying per socket or per core for a hypervisor or database, fewer, denser nodes can pay for the newer platform on its own.

What catches projects out on 17G is not the server, it is the surroundings. Xeon 6 density, E3.S NVMe and higher DIMM speeds all raise power and airflow demands, and E3.S is a different drive supply chain to the 2.5 inch drives you already stock.

We are vendor neutral, so we will happily tell you when the answer is a used 15G platform with more memory rather than a new one. Send us the workload and the constraint, whether that is budget, rack power or a licensing count, and we will spec both and show the difference.
