NVIDIA is reported to be warning its largest customers of AI server price rises above 15% in early 2027, driven by memory. The same pressure is already showing up in ordinary server and storage quotes.
What was announced
- NVIDIA is reported by Bloomberg to be planning price rises of more than 15% on Vera Rubin and Grace Blackwell servers in early 2027.
- Analysts cited by Bloter expect HBM contract prices to rise by more than 50% next year from 2026 levels; UBS, cited in the same report, projects 2027 HBM average selling prices up around 79% year on year.
- TrendForce reports the pricing momentum spans the full HBM lineup from HBM3E through HBM4 and HBM4E.
- Some DDR5 prices have nearly quadrupled over the past year according to the same reporting, with HBM profitability estimated to trail DDR5 by roughly 40 percentage points.
- Fubon Research, cited by Bloter, estimates NVIDIA could maintain a gross margin of around 75% to 80% even if HBM4 cost nearly doubles versus HBM3E, by raising system prices.
- TrendForce reports NVIDIA is weighing multiple HBM configurations for Rubin Ultra, including 8-Hi HBM4E, 12-Hi HBM4 and 8-Hi HBM4, reflecting tight DRAM supply through 2027.
The ETON view
Strip out the AI framing and this is a plain memory market story that reaches every server you buy, not just the ones with GPUs in them. When commodity DDR5 outearns HBM per wafer, manufacturers move capacity, and the pressure lands on the boring parts of a quote: RDIMMs for a virtualisation refresh, memory upgrades for an existing estate, drives for a storage tier. We are already seeing that in lead times.
The practical responses are unglamorous and they work. Specify memory generously now rather than planning to add it in eighteen months, because the upgrade will cost more than the original fit. Quote memory and drives separately from the platform so one constrained line does not hold a whole build. Take stock where it exists rather than ordering into a queue. And treat any 2027 budget built on 2026 pricing as optimistic. Our own position is to hold memory and drives rather than order them on demand, which is precisely the sort of market that makes the difference between a project shipping and a project slipping.
