The LTO Program's latest media report puts total shipped tape capacity in Q1 2026 up 57 percent year on year, driven by LTO-9 adoption and the arrival of 40TB native LTO-10 cartridges. Power limits and air-gapped recovery are pulling tape back into AI-era architectures.
What was announced
- The LTO Program Technology Provider Companies are Hewlett Packard Enterprise, IBM and Quantum.
- Total shipped tape capacity in Q1 2026 rose 57 percent year on year against Q1 2025.
- Total shipments reached a record 176.5 exabytes in 2024, a 15.4 percent annual increase, then settled to 160.3 exabytes in 2025, a 9 percent decline that still beat every year before 2024.
- LTO-10 media with 40TB native capacity arrived in early 2026 and is in initial capacity ramp-up.
- The consortium cites rising capacity requirements, data centre power constraints and demand for physically air-gapped cyber resilience as the drivers.
- The consortium expects 2026 total shipment volumes to track towards new highs.
The ETON view
A 57 percent jump in shipped capacity is not nostalgia, it is arithmetic. AI training corpora and the retention rules around them have created petabyte-scale datasets that are written once, read rarely and cannot be deleted, and putting those on flash means paying NAND prices and rack power for data nobody touches. A cartridge on a shelf draws no power at all, which matters more each year that a UK hall stays capped on kW rather than floor space.
The second driver is recovery, not cost. An offline cartridge is the only tier a compromised admin credential cannot reach, and that is now what insurers and auditors ask about. If your backup story is a snapshot on the same array as production, you have a copy, not an air gap.
Practically, LTO-10 at 40TB native halves the slot count for a given archive, so the sensible move on a library refresh is to model total slots at LTO-10 density before assuming you need a bigger frame. Just be honest about the migration: LTO-10 drives do not read the whole back catalogue, so budget the copy-forward from LTO-8 or LTO-9 media as part of the project rather than discovering it later. We source libraries, drives and media alongside disk and flash tiers, and the reason we push a mixed architecture is simple: the cheapest byte of AI archive is the one that is not sitting on an NVMe drive you had to wait twelve weeks for.
