Kioxia's XL1 puts NAND behind CXL: cheaper memory capacity while DRAM stays tight

Kioxia showed an E3.S CXL 2.0 memory expansion device built on XL-FLASH rather than DRAM at FMS 2026, demonstrating 755 ns latency and just under 2 million IOPS. It is a tiering answer to DRAM prices rather than a DRAM replacement.

What was announced

  • Kioxia showed the XL1 at FMS 2026, reported 18 September 2026.
  • The device is a 512 GB CXL 2.0 Type 3 memory expansion device in an E3.S form factor, using the EDSFF connector to run CXL instead of PCIe.
  • It is based on Kioxia XL-FLASH Generation 2, which offers higher write endurance and lower latency than TLC or QLC NAND.
  • The live demonstration showed the 512 GB device running at just under 1 GB/s with 755 ns latency, and just under 2 million IOPS on a 100 percent 512-byte load.
  • The intended model is DRAM for hot data and NAND-backed CXL capacity for colder memory regions, reducing cost per GB.

The ETON view

This is a direct consequence of DRAM pricing. When memory is the line item that moves a server quote the most, anything that adds addressable capacity without buying another RDIMM deserves testing, and a device that shares the E3.S bay with normal NVMe drives is an unusually low-commitment way to try it.

Be realistic about where it fits. At 755 ns this sits well behind DRAM and well ahead of a conventional SSD, so it earns its place in workloads with a genuinely cold memory tail: large in-memory caches, vector indexes, analytics working sets, dense virtualisation. It does nothing for latency-critical hot paths, and it depends on the platform, firmware and operating system properly supporting CXL 2.0 Type 3 memory, which is a question to settle before you design around it.

For buyers today the near-term lever is still memory strategy on current platforms: populating channels correctly, choosing the right RDIMM density instead of the largest available, and sourcing memory separately from the chassis where that is cheaper. We quote memory independently and can price a DDR5 configuration against the same server with a smaller memory footprint plus tiering, so tell us the working set rather than the capacity target.
