Intel used Hot Chips 2026 to detail Diamond Rapids, a 2027 Xeon platform with up to 256 performance cores, 1.28 GB of last-level cache and PCIe Gen6. Here is what it changes about a refresh you are planning now.
What was announced
- Intel presented Diamond Rapids, the Xeon 7 platform, at Hot Chips 2026, with the platform slated for 2027.
- A flagship configuration combines four compute building blocks for up to 256 performance cores and 1.28 GB of last-level cache.
- Sixteen memory channels feed the platform at up to 8000 MT/s DDR5 and up to 12800 MT/s MRDIMM, with a memory subsystem designed for up to 1.6 TB/s of bandwidth.
- I/O spans 128 lanes of PCIe Gen6 plus CXL 3.0 and UPI 3, with each Fabric Hub offering four x16 ports configurable as PCIe Gen6, CXL 3 or UPI 3, plus 8 lanes of PCIe Gen4.
- At package level Diamond Rapids stacks two Fabric Hub tiles, 16 core chiplets and four base tiles, with core chiplets bonded to the base tile using Foveros 3D die-to-die.
- Each core chiplet holds up to 16 cores connected to a shared last-level cache on a base tile via a 3D crossbar.
The ETON view
Diamond Rapids is a 2027 platform, so the useful question today is not whether to buy it but what it does to the decisions in front of you. Three things. PCIe Gen6 and CXL 3.0 across 128 lanes means the next platform generation is being built around attaching things to the CPU, memory pools and accelerators included, so if you are designing something that needs to live for five years, leave the I/O headroom in the chassis choice rather than the CPU choice. Second, 1.6 TB/s of memory bandwidth and MRDIMM at 12800 MT/s confirm that memory, not cores, is the scaling story, which is consistent with everything else happening in this market.
Third, and most practically: a 256-core flagship arriving in 2027 puts a clear ceiling on what today's platforms will be worth in eighteen months. If you have a refresh due, do it on current-generation hardware bought at current-generation pricing and plan the estate so the next step is additive. Waiting for a platform that is a year out, on a process that is still ramping, is how projects end up carrying five-year-old servers into 2028.
