Intel has launched its Xeon 6+ data-centre line on the Intel 18A process, topping out at 288 Efficient-cores per socket. We look at what the density and power numbers mean for consolidation projects and for the used/current-generation server market.
What was announced
- Xeon 6+ (formerly Clearwater Forest) is Intel's first 18A-process data-centre processor line.
- Top SKU Xeon 6990E+: 288 Efficient-cores, 288 threads, 576 MB cache, 2.2 GHz base, 3.2 GHz max turbo, 450 W TDP, socket FCLGA7529, launch Q2'26, list price $14,995.
- 6980E+ 264 cores / 528 MB / 400 W; 6970E+ 192 cores / 480 MB / 400 W; 6960E+ 144 cores / 432 MB / 330 W.
- The 6990E+ has a Speed Select profile running all 288 cores at 1.7 GHz within 330 W.
- Intel states a single liquid-cooled rack can reach 36,864 cores at approximately 100 kW rack power.
- Intel positions the line for cloud-native, microservices, 5G core and agentic AI hosting density.
The ETON view
Two practical takeaways. First, if a rack of Xeon 6+ can hold 36,864 cores at ~100 kW, the constraint on consolidation projects has moved decisively from CPU sockets to power and cooling - most UK colo footprints we source into are still provisioned at 6-12 kW a rack, so the honest question for a 2027 refresh is not "which CPU" but "what does the hall support". Second, a flagship at $14,995 per socket resets the value curve underneath it. Every announcement at this end of the market pulls current-generation Xeon and EPYC platforms into the secondary market faster and cheaper, which is exactly where a per-core-cost-driven workload (web tier, CI, virtualisation, licensing-bound estates) gets its best return. If you are consolidating rather than chasing peak performance, the 18A launch is a buying signal for the generation behind it, not a reason to wait.
