AWS Puts Outposts In One 42U Rack: What A 2,688 vCPU On-Premise Cloud Means For Space Constrained Sites

AWS has made second-generation single-rack Outposts generally available: compute, storage and networking in one 42U cabinet with up to 2,688 vCPU and 100 TB of EBS. It is a useful benchmark for anyone pricing on-premise capacity against a managed cloud rack.

What was announced

  • AWS announced general availability of second-generation single-rack Outposts on 10 September 2026, a self-contained 42U rack integrating compute, storage and networking.
  • A single-rack Outposts delivers up to 2,688 vCPU and 100 TB of Amazon EBS storage.
  • Supported instances include general purpose M7i and M8i, compute-optimised C7i and C8i, memory-optimised R7i and R8i, plus accelerated networking Bmn-sf2e, Bmn-cx2 and Bmn-cx3a.
  • AWS positions the single-rack configuration for low latency, local data processing and data residency in space and power constrained locations, naming manufacturing and gaming as examples.
  • Single-rack and multi-rack Outposts use the same AWS APIs, console, automation, governance policies and security controls as the parent Region.
  • The accelerated networking instances include bmn-cx2.metal-48xl with 192 vCPUs, 1,024 GiB of DDR5 and two NVIDIA ConnectX-7 400G NICs for 800 Gbps aggregate, and bmn-sf2e sizes with up to 128 vCPUs, 1,024 GiB and four accelerated NICs at 200 Gbps.

The ETON view

Strip out the branding and this is a single 42U cabinet of current x86 compute with roughly 2,688 vCPU and 100 TB of block storage, delivered and managed for you at a rental price. That is a clean yardstick. If you are a hosting provider, cloud platform or enterprise weighing an on-premise footprint, the question is no longer whether you can match the technology in one rack, because you can, with current generation Xeon nodes, NVMe capacity and 400G NICs sourced today. The question is what the equivalent owned rack costs over three to five years, and whether you need the AWS control plane badly enough to rent it.

Where the AWS pitch is genuinely strong is data residency, a consistent API surface and someone else owning the hardware lifecycle. Where it is weak is flexibility: you take the instance families offered, on the refresh cadence offered, in the countries where Outposts is supported. Built kit lets you mix GPU nodes, high core count CPU nodes and dense storage in the same rack, and keeps the option of adding capacity next month rather than next contract.

The practical point for UK buyers is power and space, which is exactly the constraint AWS is targeting. Most UK colocation halls are still sold on 6 to 12 kW racks, so one dense cabinet is often all you get in a site. That puts a premium on vCPU and terabytes per rack unit rather than on lowest unit price. We size to the power envelope first, quote current generation platforms alongside the previous generation where the price per core is far better, and give real lead times instead of a queue position. Vendor neutral across HPE, Dell, Supermicro, GIGABYTE and ASUS, with buyback on what comes out, so the comparison against a rented rack is made on total cost rather than on a monthly line item.
